Earlier this week, pop star Gwen Stefani tweeted out what appeared to be a photo of the track list of boyfriend Blake Shelton’s upcoming album If I’m Honest — including a song called “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” a duet between the tabloid-fodder lovebirds.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on Thursday, Shelton went ahead and confirmed the much-anticipated collaboration.
“[The song] is very personal for us both because, you know, we obviously have this bond that is remarkable together,” Shelton explained. “But the fact that we wrote a song together . . . I know that I don’t co-write that much because I’m very insecure about it, I guess, and [Gwen’s] kind of got her circle of people that she writes with. But for us to reach out to each other as writers, it may never happen again, who knows.”
He also said that Stefani’s seemingly spontaneous tweet was all part of his plan.
“We finally got a mock-up of the album — what the artwork was going to look like — and we flip it over and it has all the songs. I said, ‘You know what? Take a picture of that and tweet it,'” Shelton said during The Voice‘s Karaoke for Charity event in West Hollywood. “It’ll be our way to announce that, yes, we have a duet together.”
“Go Ahead and Break My Heart” will appear on If I’m Honest, out May 20th. And while there’s no word yet on what the song actually sounds like, Shelton has promised that his new album will shed more light on his real life and emotional state than ever before — which seems to be true after listening to songs like first single “Came Here to Forget” and the gospel-tinged “Savior’s Shadow.”
“I hesitate to brag on it too much,” Shelton says of his Stefani duet, “but I really think that it’s as good of a song as I’ve ever written in my life.”
